Ottawa ,ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a $1.3 billion border security plan following a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, focusing on strengthening border enforcement and combating the fentanyl crisis. As part of the agreement, proposed U.S. tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while both countries work together on these urgent issues.
“ Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan reinforcing the border with new helicopters, advanced technology, additional personnel, and enhanced coordination with our American partners,” said Trudeau. “Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working to protect the border.”
In a major escalation against the fentanyl crisis and cross-border crime, Trudeau unveiled a series of new initiatives:
Appointing a Fentanyl Czar to lead Canada’s efforts against the opioid epidemic.
Listing cartels as terrorist organizations, expanding law enforcement powers.
Ensuring 24/7 surveillance on the border to detect and stop illegal activities.
Launching a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering.
Signing a new intelligence directive on fentanyl and organized crime, backed by $200 million in funding.
U.S. Tariffs Paused Amid Strengthened Cooperation
Trudeau confirmed that proposed U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods will be paused for at least 30 days while Canada and the U.S. work on a coordinated response. This move signals a strengthening of Canada-U.S. relations and a joint effort to tackle security and economic challenges.
