Ottawa — Terry Fox, the iconic Canadian hero known for his Marathon of Hope, will be featured on the new $5 bill, the federal government announced in its 2024 Fall Economic Statement. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the current face of the $5 bill, will be moved to the next version of the $50 bill.
Terry Fox, whose inspirational cross-country run in 1980 raised millions for cancer research, continues to be a symbol of resilience and hope for Canadians. The decision reflects his enduring legacy and the impact of his efforts in uniting the nation for a greater cause.
BC Premier David Eby expressed his excitement over the announcement:
“I am elated to hear that BC and Port Coquitlam’s very own Terry Fox will be on the new $5 bill. Terry showed how strength and determination in the face of difficulty can have a lasting impact for generations to come.”
The move to honor Fox comes after years of public campaigns and petitions advocating for his inclusion on Canadian currency, recognizing his selfless contributions and heroism.
The updated $5 bill design is expected to be revealed in the coming months, with production and circulation to follow.
