Surrey, BC- Surrey’s expanded Free Waste Drop-Off event, running from May 1 to September 25, 2024, set new records in both participation and waste collection. Over 21,000 loads were delivered to the Central Surrey and North Surrey Recycling & Waste Centres, resulting in the disposal of more than 3,300 tonnes of waste and recyclables. This marks a significant increase from the city’s previous weekend pop-up junk events.
Mayor Brenda Locke expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I am happy to announce that Surrey has achieved our highest-ever results in this year’s expanded Free Waste Drop-Off event. Over five months, 3,300 tonnes of waste were disposed of responsibly. Most importantly, we have seen a 13% reduction in illegal dumping since 2021. The results are clear: by providing easier ways for our residents to get rid of unwanted items, we are creating a cleaner and greener Surrey.”
Key Achievements:
– 195% increase in loads : 21,000 loads were delivered, compared to 7,150 loads in 2019’s Pop-Up Junk Events.
– 175% increase in tonnage : 3,304 tonnes of waste were collected, up from 1,200 tonnes in 2019.
– 13% reduction in illegal dumping: Compared to 2021 levels.
The event’s extended format, in response to community feedback, made waste disposal more convenient for residents. Many praised the expanded timeframe and the generous 100kg disposal limit.
