Washington, D.C. – Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke represented the City of Surrey at the Trilateral Summit of Municipal Leaders on March 28, joining counterparts from the United States and Mexico to reinforce the importance of North American trade and economic cooperation.
In a joint statement, the mayors urged national leaders to prioritize fair and collaborative trade agreements that support businesses, workers, and families across all three nations.
“The importance of this summit cannot be overstated,” said Mayor Locke. “With families and local businesses across our communities feeling the pinch from rising costs, it is vital that we advocate for free and fair trade practices that benefit all of us. Economic consistency and stability are essential for fostering an environment where businesses can flourish, and families can plan for the future without fear of unexpected financial hardship.”
Locke highlighted the impact of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which has supported 17 million jobs across North America, but warned against the dangers of tariffs that could harm local economies.
“Together, we must push for policies that facilitate investment and simplify the movement of goods across borders. Our communities rely on these agreements to thrive, and as mayors, we bear the responsibility to speak up for the families and workers we serve.”
The Trilateral Summit emphasized the need for stronger cooperation between cities to ensure economic stability and long-term growth. Locke reaffirmed Surrey’s commitment to advocating for policies that keep trade fair, open, and beneficial to all North American communities.
