Surrey, B.C. – The future of South Westminster is taking shape as Surrey City Council has endorsed land use designations for the updated South Westminster Neighbourhood Concept Plan (NCP) during Monday’s regular council meeting. The plan envisions a Transit Village near Scott Road SkyTrain Station, mixed employment and industrial areas, and a new Waterfront District.
“The vision for South Westminster is to create a space where residents can live, work, and play within their neighbourhood,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Key components of the Plan are the creation of a Transit Village, which will provide quick and reliable rapid transit service for the community, and a waterfront destination that would create a memorable gateway into Surrey.”
Key Highlights of the Plan:
• Transit Village: A hub of housing and retail near Scott Road SkyTrain Station.
• Waterfront District: A proposed development to enhance the area’s connection to the Fraser River.
• Employment & Industrial Zones: Dedicated areas to support business growth and economic activity.
The Waterfront District and Transit Village will undergo feasibility studies, engaging key stakeholders to ensure sustainable development. Staff will continue to refine the plan and provide updates to Council as work progresses.
Originally approved in 2003, the South Westminster NCP has evolved significantly, with improved road networks and port access. In 2022, Council initiated updates to reflect ongoing growth and infrastructure needs. A Fall 2024 engagement campaign saw 476 respondents provide feedback, helping shape the plan’s next phase.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to stay engaged as Surrey moves forward with its vision for a modern, connected, and thriving South Westminster community.
