Surrey, B.C. — In a landmark decision, Surrey City Council has unanimously approved the 72 Avenue Corridor project, the largest road investment in the city’s history. The project aims to improve transportation, support local agriculture, and address the needs of a growing population.
“This monumental investment reflects our commitment to meeting the growing needs of our community,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “The improvements will not only ease congestion but will also balance the diverse needs of residents, farmers, and the environment. This crucial project will shape the future of our city.”
The 72 Avenue Corridor project consists of three major segments:
1. 144 Street to 152 Street Improvements (2026-2027):
– Two travel lanes in each direction.
– Left-turn lanes at key intersections.
– A multi-use pathway for cyclists and pedestrians on the north side, and a sidewalk on the south side.
2. 152 Street to Highway 15 Extension (2025):
– Two travel lanes in each direction.
– Enhanced ditches and wider shoulders to support farm vehicles and transportation.
3. 188 Street to 196 Street Improvements (Spring 2025-2026):
– Two travel lanes in each direction.
– Dedicated bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides.
– Limited on-street parking in designated areas.
This transformative project will connect communities, improve safety, and integrate sustainable solutions while supporting Surrey’s long-term growth. Construction for the first segment is set to begin in 2025.

Surrey, BC or GTA Ontario or any other metropolitan area of Canada doing this is taking care of the problem in a short sighted way. This is the result of concentrating economy in a few places. The real long term solution to this problem is to work towards creating infrastructure and developing economy in left out or ignored places.
