Chandigarh – As Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, addressed the ‘Punjab Vision 2047 ‘ conclave at Panjab University on Wednesday, student protests over the delay in Senate elections erupted nearby, resulting in a lathicharge by Chandigarh Police.
The protesting students, under the banner of ‘Panjab University Bachao Morcha’, had organized a march on campus, intending to voice concerns about the election delay. The march reached the vicinity of the Law Auditorium, where the Chief Minister was speaking, before police intervened. The clash escalated near the Student Centre, where five students sustained injuries as police attempted to control the crowd that had diverted from its planned route toward the event venue.
A police official stated, “The protesters had not taken permission to gather near the venue. There was no barricading around the auditorium, so we had to intervene.”
No FIRs have been registered, and no students were detained following the incident.
In response, Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa condemned the police action, describing it as an assault on students’ rights and the autonomy of Panjab University. “Ironically, while students were being caned, CM Bhagwant Mann was discussing a ‘Vision 2047’ for Punjab,” Bajwa remarked, criticizing the AAP government’s lack of progress in the past two and a half years. “Once again, the Aam Aadmi Party and BJP reveal themselves as two sides of the same coin—masters of illusion, absent in action.”
