Amritsar – The Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker, Kultar Singh Sandhwan, inaugurated a memorial dedicated to the 21 brave soldiers who fought the legendary Battle of Saragarhi. The event, held at the Golden Gate in Amritsar on Thursday, witnessed participation from dignitaries, military officials, and members of the global Sikh community.
During the ceremony, Sandhwan emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy of the Battle of Saragarhi for future generations. “The proud history of Saragarhi and the valor of the 21 Sikhs will be included in Punjab’s school curriculum to inspire youth with their unparalleled sacrifice and courage,” he said.
The memorial, spearheaded by Saragarhi Foundation Inc., USA, was inaugurated in the presence of prominent figures, including former Army Chief General J.J. Singh, Brigadier Jatinder Arora, Major General Balwinder Singh (Retd), and Dr. Gurinder Pal Singh Josan, Founder Chairman of the Saragarhi Foundation. The ceremonial guard for the occasion was performed by the 4 Sikh Battalion.
Representatives from Canada also attended, with Avtar Singh Minhas, Chairman of the Canada Chapter of Saragarhi Foundation, and Jatinder Jay Minhas, Vice Chairman, extending their gratitude to all who contributed to the memorial. Speaking on the occasion, Minhas remarked, “While entering the Golden Gate from the Jalandhar side, take a moment to pause and pay homage to the martyrs. This memorial is a testament to their courage and sacrifice.”
The event also included tributes by descendants of the Saragarhi martyrs, representatives from the British Army, and members of INTACH Punjab.
The Battle of Saragarhi, fought on September 12, 1897, is considered one of the greatest last stands in military history, where 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment valiantly defended their post against thousands of enemy forces.
The memorial stands as a symbol of their bravery, ensuring their legacy continues to inspire generations worldwide.
