Ottawa – Former central bank governor Mark Carney has been elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, securing a decisive 85.9% of the vote. Carney, a highly influential figure in global finance, now faces the daunting task of leading a struggling Liberal government amid mounting economic challenges and increasing pressure from opposition parties eager to trigger a federal election.
In his victory speech, Carney declared the Liberal Party “united and strong” despite its recent setbacks. He announced a bold economic agenda, including the elimination of the controversial Carbon Tax and to stop the Capital Gains Tax hike, signaling a shift in the party’s fiscal approach.
Carney also took a firm stance against the escalating trade war with former U.S. President Donald Trump, vowing to implement dollar-for-dollar retaliation against American tariffs. However, he acknowledged that Canada’s economy has weakened under U.S. economic pressure, emphasizing the need for stronger domestic policies.
Addressing concerns about Canada’s sovereignty, Carney firmly stated, “Canada will never be part of America in any way,” pushing back against any notion of deeper economic or political integration with the U.S.
With Parliament set to reconvene on March 24, Carney’s leadership will be immediately tested. The opposition is expected to challenge his ability to stabilize the economy and maintain government control. His next moves will determine whether he can revive Liberal fortunes or face an early election battle.
