New Delhi- Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has urged Union Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu to upgrade the status of Bathinda Airport to an international airport, citing the strategic importance of the region and the lack of nearby airports.
In her letter to the Civil Aviation Minister, Badal emphasized the need for introducing a daily Delhi-Bathinda Alliance flight using Boeing aircraft and expanding flight services under the regional connectivity scheme, UDAN. She pointed out that Bathinda’s airport is the only major airport within a 300-kilometer radius, making it an ideal candidate for upgradation.
Badal highlighted the significant demand for international flights, particularly to Canada, due to the large number of students from the eight surrounding districts, including those in neighboring states, who are studying abroad. “Flights to Canada could be started from Bathinda,” she proposed.
In addition to international flights, Badal also advocated for the introduction of flights linking Bathinda with the two holy Takhts, Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded and Sri Patna Sahib, to enhance connectivity for pilgrims.
The request is now under consideration, and the decision will play a crucial role in improving connectivity and accessibility in the region, potentially transforming Bathinda into a significant hub for both domestic and international travel.
