VICTORIA – John Horgan, former Premier of British Columbia, passed away on Tuesday morning at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria after a third battle with cancer. He was 65.
BC Premier David Eby expressed deep sorrow, saying, “John Horgan’s death leaves us with heavy hearts. John loved this province and its people. He sought to build a better, stronger British Columbia for everyone.” Horgan served as the province’s 36th premier from 2017 until 2022, stepping down after a second battle with cancer. Born and raised in Victoria, he represented the riding of Malahat—Juan de Fuca for four terms starting in 2005.
Following his departure from provincial politics, Horgan was appointed Canada’s ambassador to Germany in December 2023. He took a leave from the role in June 2024 after his third cancer diagnosis.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau honored Horgan’s legacy, reflecting on his commitment to public service: “John Horgan believed in the power of public service. He saw it as a privilege, as a way to help others and to make our country better. He loved British Columbia. As Premier, he had a tenacity, passion, and dedication for his work that very few could match.”
Trudeau praised Horgan’s leadership through challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, wildfires, and floods. He described Horgan as a “true progressive,” a champion of climate action, affordable childcare, Reconciliation, clean energy, and workers’ rights. “Through everything, he led with courage and warmth,” said Trudeau, adding, “My thoughts are with his wife, Ellie, his two sons, and all those who loved him. I will miss him dearly.”
John Horgan is survived by his wife, Ellie, and their two sons. His passing marks the end of a political career defined by dedication to British Columbia and its people.
