Halifax, NS — An Air Canada flight faced a dramatic landing gear failure Saturday evening at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, resulting in the plane skidding along the runway. The aircraft’s wing scraped the tarmac, igniting a small fire. The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. local time when the flight 2259, arriving from St. John’s, encountered a problem with its landing gear. Despite the intense situation, all 73 passengers and crew onboard were safely evacuated.
Emergency response teams swiftly extinguished the fire and secured the area. Halifax Stanfield Airport remains operational, though one of its two runways is temporarily closed.
“Flights are operating following last night’s aircraft incident, but weather conditions may result in delays,” the airport stated. “We encourage travelers to check their flight status directly with their airline or on our website before leaving for the airport.”
