Surrey, BC – In a decisive step towards addressing the region’s housing crisis, Surrey City Council has approved the use of City-owned land in South Westminster for a major new rental housing development. The approved project, located at 10975 126A Street, will bring an estimated 350 new rental homes to the city, with a minimum of 20% offered at below-market rates.
Announced during the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, the initiative reflects the City’s growing commitment to expanding affordable housing options for residents. The 2.9-acre site lies within walking distance of the Scott Road SkyTrain Station and the North Surrey Sport & Ice Complex—key factors in the selection of the location.
“Council is taking action on the shortage of affordable housing by approving the use of City owned land to help facilitate the creation of more rental homes in Surrey,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “When completed, these new units planned for this development will significantly change the landscape of housing options in Surrey.”
The proposed development will feature six-story wood-frame buildings, consistent with the area’s existing architecture. The project is a key element of the Surrey Affordable Rental Housing Strategy, aimed at increasing access to rental units for low to moderate income earners while preserving existing rental stock.
“This is a strategic opportunity for the City to address our pressing housing needs through a well-planned rental development on City land,” said City Manager Rob Costanzo. “With Council’s endorsement, staff will now begin the procurement process to secure a development partner who will design, build, and operate these homes.”
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with project completion slated for 2029.
The City of Surrey continues to support rental housing development on both private and public lands. In addition to this initiative, the Surrey City Development Corporation has submitted a development application for a multi-phased project that would add approximately 1,800 residential units on other City-owned properties.
