Ottawa, December 16, 2024 – In a significant shake-up within the Liberal government, Chrystia Freeland has announced her resignation from the federal Cabinet. The move follows Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to remove Freeland from her role as Finance Minister and offer her another Cabinet position, which she has declined.
In her resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Trudeau, Freeland described the decision as “the only honest and viable path.” She noted that a Minister must act with the full confidence of the Prime Minister, adding that she could no longer “credibly enjoy that confidence.”
Freeland, who has been a key figure in Trudeau’s government for years, expressed concerns over Canada’s economic challenges, particularly the incoming U.S. administration’s push for aggressive “America First” economic policies, including a 25% tariff threat. She emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility and avoiding political gimmicks that could weaken Canada’s economic resilience.
Freeland reiterated her dedication to serving Canadians as a Liberal Member of Parliament and confirmed her intention to seek re-election in Toronto in the next federal election.
This resignation marks a pivotal moment for the Trudeau government as it navigates economic pressures and political shifts ahead of the next election cycle.
