Ottawa- The Canadian federal government has announced that it will not accept new applications for sponsoring parents and grandparents for permanent residence in 2025. This decision aligns with the country’s revised immigration levels plan, which outlines a gradual decrease in immigration over the next three years.
Under the current plan, Canada aims to admit over 24,000 people through the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) in 2024. However, a new directive caps the number of sponsorship applications processed under the family reunification program at 15,000 for 2025.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed that only sponsorship applications submitted in 2024 will be processed next year. Meanwhile, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can continue to invite their parents and grandparents to visit through the super visa program, which allows extended stays of up to five years at a time.
This policy adjustment reflects the government’s effort to manage immigration levels while balancing the demand for family reunification.
