Ottawa- Canada has expelled six Indian diplomats, including High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) linked Indian agents to violent activity within Canada. RCMP Commissioner says agents of India pose a serious threat to safety in Canada.
The move comes as tensions between Ottawa and New Delhi escalate, following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertion in September 2023 that Canadian authorities were investigating “credible allegations” connecting Indian agents to the killing of a Canadian Sikh separatist leader.
India had previously announced it would withdraw some of its diplomatic staff, but Canadian officials have clarified that India’s announcement followed Canada’s declaration that Verma and five other Indian diplomats were being declared persona non grata. This development further strains diplomatic relations between the two countries, which have been deteriorating since Trudeau’s initial allegations, vehemently denied by New Delhi.
The expulsion marks a significant escalation in the diplomatic rift, as both countries navigate growing tensions over issues of sovereignty, security, and justice.
Kanwal jit Singh Gill says
Indian government’s agents are involved in killing Nijjar in Canada. Indian government has always labeled people raising voice against innocent killings of minorities as terrorists. Indian government never wanted Sikhs living in western countries to raise voice against innocent killings in India and demand fair justice for minorities in India.
