Ottawa- The Government of Canada has banned more than 2,300 assault-style firearms, adding 324 new models to the list of prohibited weapons. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc emphasized the government’s commitment to gun control, stating:
“Firearms designed for the battlefield do not belong in our communities. That’s why since 2015, we’ve done more than any previous government on gun control, and why we’re pursuing further action today by prohibiting 324 additional models of assault-style firearms.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also reiterated the government’s stance on social media, posting on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter):
“Military-style assault rifles don’t belong in your community. So, we’ve banned them. Our buyback system that collects and destroys these banned firearms has launched with an early pilot program. In the coming days, it will open to businesses — and later, to individuals, so they can turn over these weapons.”
The newly banned firearms will be included in the Assault Style Firearms Compensation Program (ASFCP), which provides fair compensation to businesses and individuals affected by the prohibition. This builds on similar measures implemented following the May 2020 firearms ban.
